Every once in a while, I get to do some work outside of the gym. I wish I could say I wasn't wearing spandex, but it's just not true. Definitely had leggings on. Here's an online commercial that I got to film back in February for Garnier Miracle Sleeping Cream. As Josh says, falling asleep at the computer is the role I've been preparing for my whole life. Very funny....
Our lives are filled with change, transition, and growth. When we think about these things, it's usually in a big picture sense, moving across the country, changing career paths, starting a family, etc. But within each of these big changes are many small changes. Take something as simple as turning another year older. Each month provided new experiences and insights. Each week in each month gave you something different. Each day in each week, also something new. What you take away from those experiences is up to you.
It's been a little over a year since I began my transition into teaching yoga and fitness full time. When I started teaching as a sub, I jumped on every opportunity possible with the hope that it would become something more. I've travelled all over Manhattan and Brooklyn, teaching those early morning classes that nobody wanted to cover and at places where the pay barely covered the cost of the hour long subway ride to get there and back. Throw in the bartending job, which I've just recently brought down to one night a week, and you've got a girl that works seven days a week. This past year has been an incredibly educational experience and my students have helped me grow so so much. I was very fortunate and a few places took me on and gave me weekly classes even though I was fresh out of yoga training. I am so grateful for these communities that allowed me to come in and make many mistakes, like trying to squeeze too much into a short class or planning a class without having mindful modifications and progressions or not being able to get coherent words out of my mouth at six in the morning (still working on that last one), and yet, the students came back with open hearts and open minds and let me try again the next week and the week after that and the week after that...
An important lesson I learned in yoga training was placing appropriate value on time. Having more time for my own studies will improve me and my teaching and so, it is with heartfelt gratitude tinged with sadness that I find myself stepping away from some of the places that have felt like home for this past year. I often planned my classes with these specific students in mind, men and women who have taken time out of their days, weeks, and months to share their practice and a bit of their lives with me. Thank you for everything you have taught and given me. From the deepest core of my being, Namaste.
After seven years of practicing yoga, I am going on my first ever yoga retreat! Tomorrow, I fly to Bali for a teacher training module with Tiffany Cruikshank and the Yoga Medicine crew where we'll learn all about the hip. Of course, I had to do two things at once so, although this is a retreat, it will also filled with learning. Very excited to see my bestie Stephanie and to have Josh and Ryan meet us there after to scuba dive the waters around the island. Then, it's off to New Orleans to meet up with my mom and my brother and his wife for some crawfish and oysters!
I am incredibly grateful to be living a life that allows me to take off for three weeks at a time to deepen my knowledge and practice, explore the bounties of Mother Earth, and spend time with my wonderful family. After all, absence makes the heart grow fonder and I miss them very much.
Speaking of absence, I have some phenomenal subs filling in for me while I'm away! Be sure to check them out!!
