August 2015 has been/is full of travel for weddings and training and I apologize for not keeping you more in the loop about when I was/will be away, but tonight I have amended that! On the eve of heading to Lake George for two of our dear friends' nuptials, I have finally listed my wonderful wonderful subs for you. Many of us like to travel during this month to get out of the sweltering heat of the city (although the past couple of days have been just gorgeous) so to make up for all the classes I'm not teaching, I've picked up as many as possible so we can still see each other during the week! How does that sound?? Click on the Classes link to see the list and get ready for Fall schedules to come out at Crunch Gyms in September! Looking at a very full schedule of teaching and I CANNOT WAIT to have you join me!
Our lives are filled with change, transition, and growth. When we think about these things, it's usually in a big picture sense, moving across the country, changing career paths, starting a family, etc. But within each of these big changes are many small changes. Take something as simple as turning another year older. Each month provided new experiences and insights. Each week in each month gave you something different. Each day in each week, also something new. What you take away from those experiences is up to you.
It's been a little over a year since I began my transition into teaching yoga and fitness full time. When I started teaching as a sub, I jumped on every opportunity possible with the hope that it would become something more. I've travelled all over Manhattan and Brooklyn, teaching those early morning classes that nobody wanted to cover and at places where the pay barely covered the cost of the hour long subway ride to get there and back. Throw in the bartending job, which I've just recently brought down to one night a week, and you've got a girl that works seven days a week. This past year has been an incredibly educational experience and my students have helped me grow so so much. I was very fortunate and a few places took me on and gave me weekly classes even though I was fresh out of yoga training. I am so grateful for these communities that allowed me to come in and make many mistakes, like trying to squeeze too much into a short class or planning a class without having mindful modifications and progressions or not being able to get coherent words out of my mouth at six in the morning (still working on that last one), and yet, the students came back with open hearts and open minds and let me try again the next week and the week after that and the week after that...
An important lesson I learned in yoga training was placing appropriate value on time. Having more time for my own studies will improve me and my teaching and so, it is with heartfelt gratitude tinged with sadness that I find myself stepping away from some of the places that have felt like home for this past year. I often planned my classes with these specific students in mind, men and women who have taken time out of their days, weeks, and months to share their practice and a bit of their lives with me. Thank you for everything you have taught and given me. From the deepest core of my being, Namaste.
For the very few of you who have found your way to my little blog and somehow don't know about this amazing workout that I teach called POUND, thank you for making it here!
Cristina and I danced together in good ol' Tucson, AZ, performing with our hip hop group, Cat Crew, dancing all over campus at a variety of events and games. I've had the privilege of watching her and Kirsten's POUND baby grow into the amazing empire that it is today. When the girls introduced the workout to the NYC market, I knew I wanted to be on board, but I hadn't taught a class in almost ten years and I was nervous about getting back into it, both because it had been so long and also because I wasn't sure if teaching was the path I wanted to drift back onto. During my last year in Arizona, I had the incredible privilege of teaching at Canyon Ranch, a health and fitness resort in Tucson. Then, I moved here to pursue my dream of acting and ended up falling into the restaurant business where I've been ever since.
When I took my first POUND class as part of the training, it was love at first hit. It was an immense cathartic release to get to smack these bright green Ripstix™ in the air, on the ground, and all over the place along to superb music. The next day, I was sooohh-my-god sore. I thought there was no way I was going to get through the next day of training! That's when I knew. I had so much fun, loved every minute of it, and I was so sore. That is exactly what a good class or workout should be. Something you enjoy so much that you have no idea how hard you're working and how toned you're getting. (FYI, teaching POUND once a week plus a yoga class here and there were all I needed to get in shape for my wedding, just saying'.)
That training was three years ago, almost to the date. It's been an incredible journey from that moment to today, one that I will have to share another day. Throughout that time, POUND has been my constant, creating an environment for me to connect with others, to give them that great cathartic workout that I felt that first time and still feel every time, and to become a confident and empowering teacher. That moment when you see a new student "get it", going from single taps, to doubles, to double time, and their eyes light up and brighten is something that I will never get enough of. Not only have Cristina and Kirsten created the POUND workout itself, they also: a) continue to create for us POUND Pros so our material is fresh and fun, b) made a community and platform for us instructors around the world to connect to each other, c) have a lifestyle blog with tips and tricks for tweaking your favorite recipes, awesome playlists, and tons of other delights. Speaking of their blog, ahem, they've done a feature on me as a POUND Pro. I squealed with delight when I saw this, which was a surprise for me as well, and to feel the love from my student and fellow instructors was just...incredible, heart-warming, and precisely what I needed. THANK YOU for the LOVE and for all the marvelous times we've had together thus far! Until we meet again!
